| | Dead Man's Handle, Peter O'Donnell | ] | Went to the Charing Cross Hospital today for someone new to stick pins in my leg and suck their teeth. This time it was a cheerful young chap in surgeon's scrubs - he would have fitted in well as an extra in ER.
In order to demonstrate where the dodgy nerves ran, and to give me a crash-course in medical terminology, he lounged back in his swivel chair and spread his legs apart. Then he told me to drop my trousers and he stuck something sharp in me.
Ahem. For those who haven't been following this saga, I have a couple of patches on my legs where there's either no feeling or sharp pain and the theory is that trapped nerves are causing this. So every specialist who examines me starts jabbing pins into my legs to see where there's feeling and where there isn't.
The long and the short of it is that he's referred me for more tests - they're going to plug an electric current into me somewhere where the nerves are definitely working (above the waist probably) and then stick a load of electrodes in my legs to see where the current comes out and where it doesn't. That'll confirm or explode the diagnosis before they start slicing me up.
So, a constructive visit. Unfortunately, it's cost me a day's earnings as the appointment was slap bang in the middle of the day. He was an hour late seeing me and I was in and out in five minutes...
In other news, most of the people on my friends' list here on DJ seem to be depressed about one thing or another. Either that, or just plain run down. (Exceptions: redhotcivicchic, who seems to be enjoying some long-overdue good times, deadwendi, moving to be with the man of her dreams, and nathaara, who's almost permanently cheerful. I don't know how she does it but I envy her for it.) It's as if someone flicked a switch about a week ago and people's lives changed. It's almost enough to make you believe in astrology. Guys, stick with it - things go in cycles and if you're down now you'll be up again soon, honest.
I'm going now - a chinese takeaway just arrived at the door :o) |
